Hunger Alleviation and Nutrition - Overview |
Infant and maternal undernutrition is the leading cause
of the global burden of disease
Source: Ezzati etc al 2002
Transformative Goal:
Eliminate hunger and micro and macronutrient malnutrition in children.
Defining the Global Challenge:
- Child and maternal under-nutrition accounts for 35% of the disease burden in children younger than five years, and is the number one cause of the total global disease burden.1, 5
- Annually, 1.7 million children die because of severe acute malnutrition and 3.6 million die because of moderate acute malnutrition.4
- Just four micronutrients, Vitamin A, Zinc, Iron and Iodine, account for over 1.1 million preschool deaths per year.1
- Malnutrition accelerates the onset of symptoms for people infected with HIV/AIDS. Yet one of the earliest side-effects of AIDS is reduced consumption of food in affected households.3
