FAQs
Get answers about CIFF’s charitable objective, funding, and governance.
CIFF (pronounced ‘Sif’) was established in 2002 with the goal of supporting bold ideas and action to solve some of the world’s most difficult issues that affect children’s lives.
Over the subsequent decades CIFF has grown into one of the globe’s leading independent philanthropies, and the largest foundation dedicated to improving the lives of children.
CIFF is an independent philanthropy that invests in the partners and solutions creating large-scale, locally-owned change, to create a world where all children flourish.
Children grow up quickly, so every day matters. Interlinking global challenges require us all to work at pace to remove barriers, strengthen national systems and rapidly scale solutions. As an independent organisation working in communities across the globe, we can connect projects that work – and help others learn from what doesn’t – to accelerate and scale change for children.
When challenges are interlinked, positive action can create large-scale change. CIFF has over $3 billion actively invested in projects and people who are improving systems and structures: tackling climate change, improving health and nutrition, and promoting opportunities and choice for women and girls.
A world where children are healthier, safer and have opportunities is a world that is more prosperous and secure, for everyone.
In 2002, Sir Chris Hohn gifted CIFF an endowment, from his hedge fund The Children’s Investment Fund (TCI), founded in the same year. Over time, CIFF’s endowment has grown and is now structured to be separately held from TCI, and CIFF is an independent organisation.
CIFF’s endowment continues to be managed by TCI. Sir Chris and TCI continue to make gifts to CIFF that support our endowment. Approved CIFF programmes are funded from our endowment and restricted gifts from Sir Chris and TCI.
CIFF currently has over $3.1 billion in active investments. To meet the global need for climate and development finance, we also work to catalyse further private and philanthropic investment, build partnerships and secure co-funding for projects.
